The new community garden located on Derbyshire Road in Daytona Beach, is owned and operated by Derbyshire Place, a faith-based non - profit organization. "The garden is a success," said Miquel Rodriquez, executive director of Derbyshire Place. " It has 36 lots, that sold out as soon as residents in the community were notified of the lots for rent." he said. The price to the community ranged from twenty five dollars to ten dollars per lot per year.
Daytona Beach has been designated as a food desert, by the Florida Department of Health. The residents in the community don't have access to fresh vegetables and fruits unless they travel to Publix, Winn Dixie, Wal - Mart or Save - A - Lot stores. Citizens touring the garden will find a variety of vegetables including potatoes, squash, sweet potatoes, eggplants, black - eyed peas, herbs, collard greens, mustard greens, and lettuce.
