One of the most feared phrases among sports fans right now is, "Due to Covid-19" . That phrase is typically followed by disappointing news. For instance, due to COVID-19, at least 54 of the 130 sports team will not be participating in fall sports.
In late July, the “Fresh From Florida Sunshine Showdown” Florida-Florida State game was cancelled as major conferences searched for ways to salvage the conference schedules. Closer to home, HBCU fans felt the pain as the MEAC suspended all Fall sports indefinitely. A decision which also resulted in postponing the 41st Florida Blue Florida Classic between in-state rivals Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman University. According to a statement on www.floridaclassic.org, the games organizers are still hoping for the chance to reschedule the game, “when it is appropriate to do so”.
The suspension of the games came on the heels of both B-CU and FAMU announcing they will be leaving the MEAC for the SWAC in 2021. If the conference does not decide to play in the spring, both schools may have played their final game in the MEAC.
