On Oct. 24, the "Free The Vote" rally was held at the New Smyrna Beach Regional Library at 1001 S. Dixie Freeway in New Smyrna. The event consisted of voting, free food and free music and voting.
"It is all about people being able to exercise their right to vote. We are just here encouraging people to vote," said Shyraika Morris, Event Coordinator. The event is part of statewide efforts to get people to the polls and spearheaded by the Florida Rights Restoration Committee.
The event was also designed to get returning citizens out to vote as a result of Amendment 4. In the 2018 Midterm Election voters passed
Amendment 4 to the state's constitution. It restores voting rights to ex-felons who meet the criteria except for those on probation or parole, sex offenders and violent offenders.
The event was also different as there were no speakers. Other sponsors of the event included: Florida Coalition of Black Participation, Black Women Round table. Food was provided by The Ice Queen Truck and Finger Licking BBQ & Wings. Music was provided by C-Styles Entertainment.
