Damion W. Rhodes: A Rising Star

Though new to the canvas, Damion W. Rhodes' artistic journey began in 2014 with a Fine Arts degree from Eastern Florida State College. His artistic fire truly ignited in 2023, and his work has already graced the walls of prestigious venues like the Cape Canaveral Public Library, the Surfside Playhouse, and the Merritt Island Public Library.

Mrs. Mary Allen, CEO of the African American Museum of the Arts, is thrilled to present this exciting new talent.  "I am elated to feature this new, up-and-coming artist at the museum," she says. "I am also just thrilled to be able to provide this opportunity to a young artist."

Damion himself describes a lifelong artistic spark that blossomed into a full-fledged artistic pursuit.  "I think I've always been [an artist]; we all are at first," he reflects. "My mother (RIP) would always buy me coloring/activity books. I had a library of them by the time I was seven. I loved comic art, Jack Kirby, illustrations in dictionaries and encyclopedias, science books etc. I don't really believe I could actually paint or draw until last year."

What can patrons expect from "The Self Actualization Exhibit"?  Damion offers a glimpse into the experience. "So far, from what I've gathered, they may be surprised, confused possibly (my range is pretty wide) at first, although once the description is read the intention becomes clear."

He encourages visitors to come with an open mind.  "The mind is like a parachute; it works best when it's open," he says.
