On Jan. 15, Daytona Beach residents braved the cold weather and the Covid-19 pandemic to attend the Voters Rights Matter rally in Daytona at the base of the International Speedway Bridge. Dr. Ronald Durham led the event.
On Monday Jan. 17, residents of Daytona celebrate the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday with a prayer at Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church, which was followed by the annual march and a community festival in Daisy Stocking Park.
DeLand, held their traditional march through downtown followed by their annual community festival in Earl Brown Park. The Register to Vote booth was set up at the festival on Monday in Deland. Several vendors also attended the event. Deland Commissioner Jessica Davis interacts with the youth about the history of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the festival.
The weekend events focused on voting rights across the nation. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s family urged Congress to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act.
